WEEK 3 - THE BIRTH OF THE TOWER

The main thrust of the week has been the tying and casting of the foundation columns. They have been rising daily around the site like phoenixes rising out of the ashes of the old building. A bit poetic I agree, but sometimes the heat does get to you!

It has been an extremely hot week but the team have still achieved a great deal. One member has planted cucumber, melon and other local vegetables for on-site consumption, but has had to protect the embryonic seedlings from the sun with make-shift palm frond shades.

Lucelec finally came good at 7pm Friday and we now have a temporary electricity supply to the site and a security light on the shed.

So much progress on the steel front - but still a lot to come.

A first this week has been the erection of the first bamboo supports for the pump house roof and decking beams.

However, the news that will please Brett the most (we hope) is the birth of the tower. The footings were cast at the beginning of the week,

followed by columns
and then the first of the blocks. Now the walls are at main floor level, work will stop on it whilst the remainder of the construction reaches the same level. However, Kenrick says it is so far advanced now that it is too late to sacrifice it as an economy measure. So the tower is here to stay!!
Next week we move into the horizontal plane with the construction of the form work for the ground floor beams.
